Executive Summary

Alltrade Scaffolding was engaged to deliver safe, compliant, and efficient scaffold access to support roof and cladding works at a large residential property on Hodgson Street, Kew. With roof heights ranging from 6.7m to 8.3m, the solution required staged scaffold bays, integrated roof rails, and custom tie-ins,  all designed to facilitate multiple trades while minimising site disruption.

Situation

Located in a residential area of Kew, the project involved significant roof restoration and cladding works. The façade consisted of multiple rooflines with staggered elevations. The client required a system that offered full-length access, safe working platforms, and clean vertical movement, while also maintaining site containment and street-level presentation.

Scaffold Scope

Alltrade Scaffolding designed and installed a custom K-Stage scaffold system featuring:

• Three main scaffold platforms across the entire façade
• Platforms at 0.7m wide, allowing clear trade access
• Three-board hop-up brackets for extended workspace and safe tool access
• 1m down top lift configuration for safe elevation alignment
• Full perimeter 4-pin roof rails for compliance with fall protection standards
• Multiple tie-in configurations (e.g. 3+3+2+2m out) to suit structural needs
• Black shade cloth from top to bottom to ensure dust and debris containment

Each scaffold section was clearly demarcated to serve distinct site areas, and two 2.4m x 0.7m ladders were integrated at both ends of the scaffold for vertical access.

Challenges

• Variable Heights: Roof levels ranged from 6.7m to 8.3m, requiring a flexible scaffold system.
• Site Access & Movement: The scaffold had to be segmented to allow trade access in distinct zones.
• Safety Compliance: AS/NZS compliance was essential, especially around roof-edge protection.
• Public Visibility: Being a residential street, minimising visibility and mess was key.

Timeline and Outcome

Installation and staging were completed efficiently, enabling trade access within required project timelines. The scaffold provided uninterrupted access for roofers and cladding specialists, supported safe material handling, and reduced risks of exposure in the active work zone.

The use of black shade cloth provided the additional benefit of limiting visibility from public areas, an important consideration in residential zones like Kew.

By using a modular K-Stage system and strategically planning hop-up placements, the team was able to maximise access while minimising structural loading. The consistent 0.7m platform width across all bays created uniformity for trade movement, while the 4-pin roof rail integration ensured top-tier fall protection.
